ALLOTUNA Italian Project

MFF participated in the Italian ALLOTUNA Project and contributed substantially to the development of ABFT broodstock under the expertise of Dr Robert Vassallo Agius, who was overseeing the broodstock nutrition aspect for the spawning seasons of 2008, 2009 and 2010; as well as egg collection techniques and lectures on broodstock management and nutrition at the University of Bari, that was the project coordinator. Other partners included the University of Dusseldorf (Germany) the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (Greece), Panittica Pugliese (Italy) and the Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research Institution (Israel).

ALLOTUNA, was an immediate success and resulted in the first spawning success and egg collection from captive Atlantic Bluefin tuna. Large amounts of eggs were collected from the Atlantic Bluefin tuna broodstock cages during the spawning seasons of 2008, 2009 and 2010.
